Anyone who knows me knows that I love music! Over the past 20 years (yes, since I was 5 years old), I have developed a deep affection for jazz. Listening to the greats has often been a catalyst to creativity when it is time to write a paper for class, a story for a magazine, or design a poster for my friend’s baby shower.  Jazz does it all – soothes the soul when it’s restless and gives you a boost when you’re dragging.

This time is a great time for jazz. It’s still festival season! This week there are 2 festivals to feed my yearning for good music.

Friday August 31, Saint Augustine’s University has the 2nd Annual Music Festival featuring great local musical talent like trumpeter Al Strong, vocalist Eve Cornelius, and go-go band Jus Once Band.  Then Saturday in High Point the Coltrane Jazz and Blues Festival goes down and I cannot wait to see Kirk Whalum! Oh, yeah, and some other great jazz artists will be there too, including Stanley Clarke and George Duke.

More jazz! The Hopscotch Music Festival is September 6-8 in Raleigh. But to kick it off, you have to join me for The Art of Cool Project’s Bopscotch! We are going to kick off Hopscotch right with a day party on the 7th at Flanders Gallery in Raleigh from noon to 3pm. We’re presenting the greatest local jazz artists including trumpeter Al Strong and his quintet, and YahZarah is bringing her powerful vocals. You never know who is going to show up to sit in. There will be good jazz and good refreshments. What a combo! For more info on Hopscotch, check

Then September 13-16 SPARKcon ignites with an explosion of creativity! It features music, dance, theatre, circus, and a fashion show! Creative juices flowing! So of course The Art of Cool has to set it off. Back at Flanders Gallery again The Art of Cool celebrates SPARKcon with the MusicSPARK concert on September 13th from 6-8pm. Jazzheads are going to love it with the Lance Scott trio and Peter Lamb & the Wolves! For more info on SPARKcon, go to Both of these events are free so it’s easy on the budget. Who can pass up great music, drinks, friends and FREE!

If you’re like me, you cannot get enough jazz! To keep up with what’s going on in jazz, make sure to visit and sign-up your e-mail for our Weekly Entertainment Guide!
