Hey #SmartyPants! Have you heard the news?
Ultra high speed internet is coming to the Triangle! Just how fast will the new service be? 1 Gigabit. How fast is that you ask? Fast enough that you can download 25 songs in 1 second, a TV show in less than 3 seconds & an HD movie in less than 36 seconds!!
In February, we learned that Google identified the Triangle as one of nine metropolitan areas where they are considering expanding their high-speed Internet and TV service, Google Fiber. The service would offer speeds up to 100 times faster than the average broadband connection in the area.
Yesterday, AT&T announced that they have reached an agreement with the NCNGN (NC Next Generation Network) group to pursue plans to bring their ultra high-speed Internet service, GigaPower, to the Triangle and parts of the Triad. The only other area in the US with GigaPower service is Austin, TX.
The AT&T plan identifies Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh as areas they would like to provide service to. Those five cities are also being considered by Google. All of the municipalities must ratify the agreement before the service is adopted.
